A strength training app for your real week. Every kilo has a reason.

Wellbuilt builds your first program from your answers, then each next block from your own sets. No gym today, or a week away? The plan moves with you.

  • Under every exercise: what you lifted last time, next to today's load.
  • Under 5.5 hours of sleep? The check before training takes it into account in today's load and says why.
  • 171 different studies you can look up on PubMed. Where there is no study, the app says so.

You got a number. You didn't get a reason.

The program gives you a load for today. It doesn't say why that one. It doesn't know you slept five hours. It doesn't know your knee hurts. And when the block ends, the next number is a guess again.

So you can't tell if the load is right. And when it isn't, you can't fix it with a reason.

How it works

Every kilo has a reason.

Four things set the load on the bar. You see all four.

A program from your answers, not from a template.

You answer a few questions: goal, experience, how many days a week, how many minutes, what equipment you have, whether anything hurts. Wellbuilt picks one of five programs, or without a gym the Home strength and muscle program, and tells you why that one. You choose the length, from 4 to 16 weeks, or take the recommended 8. Got a meet? The program runs to meet day.

Why this program: You want more strength and more muscle, not one at the cost of the other: heavy squat, bench and deadlift, plus work that builds muscle.

Under every exercise: what you lifted last time.

"Last time, 3 Oct: 100 x 8, 8, 7 at RPE 8." Under it, today's target. The plus and minus buttons step by one small plate on each side of the bar or one dumbbell in the rack, and you see which plates go on each side. The load didn't fall from the sky. It came from your last session.

Today's target

100 kg

Each side: 25 + 15

Rule in this example: when all three sets reach 8 reps, the load goes up 2.5 kg. Double progression, a coaching convention.

Slept badly? The load knows.

Before training, a short check: sleep, muscles, energy, stress, motivation. The verdict shows right away and can lower the load, with the reason next to it. If something hurts or you have an injury, exercises for that area are swapped or left out. During an exercise you press the pain button and get guidance: go lighter or stop. It is not a diagnosis. If something hurts, see a doctor or physiotherapist.

How we score readiness is our own convention, not a study result. The Science page says so plainly.

1 poor, 5 goodExample

Readiness 80/100: load 0 %.

The next block grows from what you lifted.

When a block ends, one button builds the next one. It keeps your answers from before and sets the maxes from your logged sets. If you got stronger, it shows. If you didn't, that shows too.

Want more precision? Film a squat, bench or deadlift set from the side with your phone and get bar speed. For squat and bench, after a few filmed sets with RPE logged, you also get an estimate of how hard the set was. The video stays on your phone. The reading is approximate, from a single side view, and sometimes it says: unclear.

Estimate from your recent logged sets. It never drops below the stored max; that is a convention.

Every rule shows its study. Or says there is none.

Behind every training and nutrition rule are published human studies, each shown with its design and what it found. Where there is no study, it says: convention. For example, how readiness is scored. Don't know what RPE is? Tap the word and it explains itself.

Why I built it

For most of my training years I got numbers without reasons: a load for today, with no word on why that one. So I built Wellbuilt, a program that shows where a load comes from and says honestly where there is no research. I train with it myself. If something doesn't add up, write to me.

At launch: three steps to your first session

  1. Answer the questions.

    Goal, days, equipment, pain.

  2. Get your program.

Your sessions and exercises, with where each load comes from.

  3. Go train.

The app guides you set by set, with rest and the reason for it.

Training, nutrition and progress in one program

Today.
Your session for today and the readiness check.
Session.
One exercise at a time, the next set big in the middle, a rest timer with the reason for that rest time.
Program.
Calendar, blocks and a periodization chart. Swap, add or remove an exercise.
Progress.
Weekly volume per muscle, estimated max history, personal records.
Nutrition.
Calorie and macro targets from your weight, activity, training and goal. A 14-day weight trend corrects the estimate. Food diary, meal suggestions from 20 dishes, recipes and a shopping list. Tell it what you don't eat among the 14 EU allergens, and suggestions respect it. Still read the label.
Body.
Weight, body fat by measuring method, flexibility.
Conditioning.
In the Conditioning program: running, cycling or rowing, mostly easy, with up to two strength days. In the Health program: cardio on the days without strength.
Warm-up.
Warm-up before lifting, stretching on rest days.
Exercise guides.
How to do it, usual mistakes, why it is in the program, and a demo video or a video search.

Science

Studies you can check

55 training and nutrition rules. 171 distinct studies, each with a PMID number you can look up on PubMed. Every study shows its design, such as a meta-analysis or a randomised trial, and what it found.

And where there is no study, it says so. For example: how readiness is scored, or the meet attempt percentages. Those are conventions and they are labelled that way.

  • Stretching goes on rest days, not before lifting.

Stretching does not prevent injury or muscle soreness.

What Wellbuilt is not, plainly

  • Not on the App Store or Google Play.

It is a web app you add to your phone's home screen.

  • Powerlifting and powerbuilding need a barbell and a rack.

For strength or muscle without a gym you get the Home strength and muscle program: bodyweight exercises and the equipment you have.

  • It does not connect to a watch or Apple Health.

You type in weight, body fat and sets yourself.

  • It does not diagnose.

For pain or injury, see a doctor or physiotherapist.

Questions

Do I have to pay before I see the program?

No. At launch you answer the questions and see which program fits you first, then you choose a plan.

What if the load doesn't fit?

You see where it comes from: your last set, today's check, your pain. You change the load with a button, by one small plate on each side or one dumbbell. What you lift goes into the next block.

I don't understand RPE. Is that a problem?

No. RPE means how hard it was. Tap a term like RPE in the app and it explains itself.

I have an injury. Can I still train?

Tell it what hurts or what you injured, and exercises for that area are swapped or left out. If you answered yes on the health screen, you start gently. The app does not diagnose. Talk to a doctor or physiotherapist before you start.

What about cardio?

The Conditioning program is built around it: running, cycling or rowing, mostly easy. The Health program puts cardio on the days without strength.

I train at home.

That works. For strength or muscle without a gym you get the Home strength and muscle program: bodyweight exercises and the equipment you have. Muscle grows; your one-rep max with a barbell grows less without heavy loads.
